The New Styrian Cultural Festival
Styria is not only rich in culture, but also in festivals: The 'steirische herbst' (Styrian Autumn), a recognised festival of contemporary art, and the music festival ‘styriarte', just to name two, are fixed dates in Styrian cultural life and well-known beyond the province's borders.
From 2008 onwards, Styria has one more cultural festival: The new 'regionale', which will take place in a different area of Austria's second largest region every two years, and will cover different topics. The biennial rhythm not only gives the chosen areas an opportunity to develop and present themselves artistically with contemporary projects, but also to interchange artistic positions nationally and internationally.
"Artistic creation should be neither hindered by a lack of personal financial resources, nor by geographic location", comments the Member of the Provincial Government for Cultural Affairs, Kurt Flecker. "Cultural policy must empower, cultural policy must create space, cultural policy must reduce thresholds. Contemporary regional culture needs space and a fertile ground for growth, and Styria should present itself internationally in its entirety as living cultural region."
