Open Sky Rooms Beyond their Purpose
Art Space has Many Dimensions
The title is the programme: During regionale08, tomorrow's art and art from all points of the compass is on display at the ‘Open Sky' exhibition. Visitors to the rooms of Kalsdorf Castle near Ilz may expect more than just the customary during their explorations. Outside the castle, a steel sculpture by the artist Hartmut Skerbisch, entitled ‘Sphere', already offers the first hint on the topic: In the widest possible sense, it is all about how real and imaginary rooms are constructed and transposed in the visual arts. Skerbisch created the sculpture between 2006 and 2008. The open sectional steel construction with a diameter of exactly 1,274 cms corresponds to the proportions of the Earth at a ratio of 1 to 1m.
‘Open Sky' is realised by the team of the Kunstverein Medienturm (Art Society Media Tower) of Graz under Sandro Droschl. Twenty young artists present on three floors their creations that have been on show at various international exhibitions in the recent past. In addition, new works are on display that have been especially created around the theme of the exhibition. Artists from Afghanistan (Lida Abdul), Romania (Calin Dan), Sophia Tabatadze who was born in Georgia, Julia Meltzer and David Thorne, currently living in Los Angeles, the Swiss Yves Thorne, and the Austrians Hartmut Skerbisch, Bernhad Frühwirth who has been awarded the Otto Mauer Award, and Franz Kapfer have been invited.
